Welcome to the AL - 02 Big List.
This list has been an attempt to keep up with everyone in either political party who has been credibly mentioned (in public or private) as a potential candidate for Alabama’s 2nd Congressional District since Rep. Terry Everett (R - Rehobeth) announced that he will not run for re-election.
Both parties’ qualifying period ended April 4, 2008. Three Democrats and six Republicans qualified for the primary race, and they are listed below. The primary is June 3.
The Political Parlor will update the Alabama Line (found in the sidebar) for the race, though perhaps not as fast as you like since input from a wide array of people is sought.

Bright has reported. He is now at $212K, up from $54K on 30 April. That’s $158K in 45 days.

Love is hurting for money. He has about $140K to spend the rest of the way - and he spent twice that much in the last month. He’s spent half a million total - his well has gone dry.
Plus he only raised about $200K from actual donors in the ENTIRE campaign. His support - from those giving him money - is none too good. Of course, Woods and Schmidtke also have no donors other than themselves, but they aren’t professional politicians. Only Smith has raised money the way you would expect a serious congressional contender to raise money.

David Woods and Craig Schmidtke have spent that much personal cash as well.

Love just dropped another $100K in his campaign. He now has $449,000 of his own money in the campaign. Does this make it a Millionaire’s Race?

Lil Ole Me: “Unfortunately, too many people put their total faith in polling numbers”
Belief in mantras like this is a sure sign your candidate will get banged like gong.

Just what we need . . .runny Schmidtke . . .

By now I figure you have taken your daily shot of Geritol, and have had your 3rd or 4th cup of coffee. That should be enough to get your motor running for the rest of the day until naptime around 12:30.
I have no more time to watse bickering with you, so I will move on.
I like the post #972 from A-non. I agree, and believe that with a little more hard work in the area, Schmidtke can make an impressive run. Unfortunately, too many people put their total faith in polling numbers, and believe everything they read in the newspaper and on the internet. If my guess is correct, the race will come down to a difference of fewer than 2000 votes between 1st & 2nd, maybe even closer. I am sure that when the numbers are tallied, some of the candidates will be wishing they had spent a little more time in some areas, and less in others.
By the way, there is a forum tonight in Montgomery, hosted by the Montgomery County Republican Club. I saw an email that said it is open to the public, and that dinner will be $7.00. It is being held in the cafeteria of faulkner University, and doors will open at 6:45.

Little Ole Me:
You pitiful thing! I’m glad you have cousins and old friends to confide in. By the way, your comments, and rambling message tonight has led me to believe that you are either under some sort of medical treatment or that you are drunk as he$%!
I stand by what I said about Dr. “pukey”.
Go ahead and take that last tab and nod on out. You need to wake up for another day of reality! You are completely out of touch with the real world at this point in time! night, night.
p,s. - I hear homes in Minnesota, Wisconsin & Michigan are going at bargain rates!

I heard that Schmitke is making a surprising push in Montgomery. Love, Grimes & Woods are taking a hit.
Smith may rebound all over the district. WHAT DO YOU THINK!

As you are obviously unaware of, appointees are tested by means of a check on their academic records, their PT test before the graduate from highschool, and then in the weeks proceeding their freshman appearance to the Academy, thay are given a physical. You weren’t aware of this, else you wouldn’t have made the comments in your last post. By the way, I have two cousins and had a friend from highschool, who were also appointed to the Naval Academy, and I confirmed this with them, as well as the website, before I ever posted that previous message. (do your homework)
I wasn’t aware that the draft had been reissued, thus I didn’t know that it was his “obligation” to attend the Naval Academy. None the less, I am sure that you will make up some unfounded comment to further press the issue. Face it, you are a supporter of a candidate who doesn’t have what it takes to be a leader in Congress. You are the type that thinks if you can’t be right, make as much noise as you can to draw attention away from the fact that you hitched your wagon to the wrong star. Be a big boy, and fess up, and admit that your candidate is running a little scared and we can move forward. Otherwise we can continue this little episode of bickering as long as you like.
once again, ‘NUFF SAID………

Why do you think there will be a run-off? I had heard that Smith was out front and could possibly win.
Comment by Anonymous — May 19, 2008 @ 9:08 pm
I don’t think any of them will come out and be negative until we reach the run off. If they do - it will be subtle and they will not call anyone out by name. But when we get to the run off (and I am sure there willbe one) then it may be a blood bath between the two that remain standing.
Comment by Anonymous — May 19, 2008 @ 7:32 pm
A question to watch — who will go negative first? I have my money on MH’s girl Smith.

Little Ole Me:
Bless your heart, you must be a carpetbagger also! By the way, your story about flunking the physical may have been something he said to a particular crowd, but that is not correct. He dropped out of his obligation to his country! You have to pass a physical to even be considered for a military appointment to an academy.
Also, FYI, I had 9 months of basic training and advanced individual training (AIT) at Army installations out of this state. I also received wy bachelors degree from a school in this state that is not located in the Wiregrass. So, only military and academic obligations have taken me from the Wiregrass for short periods of time. I was born and reared here and I have lived here all my life.
Another thing, If you think I’m supporting that ignorant “hick” from Slocomb you are way off base. Electing her to represent us in the US Congress, for the next 20 years, would be the biggest embarassment that our state has ever known.
Little Ole Me, after this election is over, I have a feeling that Dr. Pukey will probably move back to Minnesota, Wisconsin or Michigan. You may want to follow his lead!

reply to #964:
Just shows how little you listen when people are speaking, I guess. Yes, he did receive an appointment to the naval academy. But you obviously have select hearing, else you would have heard him when he explained that he was dropped after flunking the physical. Yes, that is right, he flunked the physical because of poor eyesight! (he wanted to fly) So, instead of waiting for a full year to pass in order to reapply, he decided to attend the University of Minnesota, where he walked on to the football team. But, as you, obviously an elitist yourself, would consider it, I guess that is not good enough. You obviously have what is referred to as rectal glaucoma. I would elaborate on the issue, but I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt in being smart enough to figure it out.
By the way, I am sure that Alabama isn’t the only place you ever called home in your illustrious military career, so before you throw stones at someone for moving to an area, you should try to remember that he chose to move here, and preside here in the State of Alabama. We couldn’t all be blessed with the opportunity to be born here. As for his “twang”, at least he doesn’t put on false airs. He could pose himself in front of a barn, or with some family members who own a tractor, to try to make the appearance that he is a good old country boy. He could pose with someone in a uniform and make nice like he is actually talking about issues in his commercials, or he could sicken us all by saying “Congress could use a little Slocomb”…….what a farse! Instead, he remains his own person, and what you see is what you get. I am sorry that what you see isn’t to your liking. You are entitled to your opinion, and that is fine. I just warn that your opinion may be swayed by Eddie Haskell and June Clever, and if so, BOY ARE YOU GONNA BE DISAPPOINTED!!

Little Ole Me:
Anonymous is correct, Dr. Schmitke will run a distant 4th in the race in June 3rd. He is an elitist, yankee, who is trying to portray himself as “one of us.” His speaches are vain and pompous. It is almost as if he is saying “I am going to sacrifice my Dr. status and the money that it brings to help you poor dumb southern peasants.”
His “puky” northern twang is so nauseating. I have to “mute” the tv button before listening to his disclaimers. Oh! and one more thing about Craig, (His vanity will not allow him to refer to himself as anything but “Dr.”)He received an appointment to the US Naval Academy, but he dropped out because military life did not suit him. As a veteran, I take offense to “military drop-outs.” — I’ getting queezy just talking about him. Nuff said!
Comment by TH — May 19, 2008 @ 1:11 pm
Schmidtke may very well be the reason Smith doesn’t make a run off in this race. He is taking votes from her right and left in the Wiregrass and opening the door for Woods and Love to run off.

Here, here annonymous. Trying the patience of the board? What board? You try to speak as if you are some member of “the powers that be” or something, yet you post yourself as annonymous…..what a crock!!
And name calling….how pathetic and childish. Did the bully at school take your milk money and cause the rest of your life to be a shambles? Get real, this is a “board” for adults. You say I am trying the “patience of the board”, but what about your name calling of “yankee” and “talks through his nose”? Pure childishness. Crawl back under your blankey before the boogey man comes to get you.
It just simply sounds to me like someone’s candidate isn’t cutting the mustard, so they think that taking it out on another candidate will make them feel better. Well, I’ve got news for you, when all is said and done, you will still be a whiner, but a whiner who’s candidate lost.
Have a nice day!!
Comment by little ole me — May 19, 2008 @ 12:11 pm
For little ole me- I’ll say it -Dr. doesn’t stand a chance.
A Yankee from Wisconsin who only moved here three years ago named Scmidtke who talks through his nose will never win in the Wiregrass. Peiod.
Now stop saying stipd things. You are trying the patience of the board.
