Welcome to the AL - 02 Big List.
This list has been an attempt to keep up with everyone in either political party who has been credibly mentioned (in public or private) as a potential candidate for Alabama’s 2nd Congressional District since Rep. Terry Everett (R - Rehobeth) announced that he will not run for re-election.
Both parties’ qualifying period ended April 4, 2008. Three Democrats and six Republicans qualified for the primary race, and they are listed below. The primary is June 3.
The Political Parlor will update the Alabama Line (found in the sidebar) for the race, though perhaps not as fast as you like since input from a wide array of people is sought.

I have this really cool program on both my digital camera and my vido camera. It is called a green screen. I can take a picture (or a movie) of a person, animal or object, and place it in front of a green screen (in Hollyweird they use a blue screen for this). Then I can go back and load whatever background I want into the computer and voila! I have a picture of one of my cats towering over a human being…or I have my ‘giant’ cat chasing down a grizzly bear in the forest.
Photos and video are no longer the ‘proof’ that they once were. Images can be manipulated digitally in any number of ways. The same goes for a ‘cancelled check’. The government has had to make drastic changes to our currency because it had gotten so easy to forge it using little more than a desktop computer and a high quality printer. The banking industry has not caught up to the technology of the US Mint.
As I’ve said before, if you really have something like this, you need to have it authenticated by a professional…
I’m surprised that with all the posts Danny has pulled of people making allegations about candidates, that he hasn’t either pulled your posts on this subject, or demanded to see your ‘proof’. At this point, you have nothing but unsubstantiated allegations.

To dear ole MH, “whatever”. HAS will be outed soon enough with her gambling ties. You might want to ask her straight up about it before you die on the sword for her. You are going to feel quite foolish when she is exposed. Cancelled checks are even better than photos.

I’m a whiner????? ROFLMTO! If nothing else, you are good for a laugh now and then.
Do you remember the board game ‘Clue’? I suggest you go down to Walmart and pick one up. Open the box up and put some of the Clue Cards in your wallet or shirt pocket…you seem in dire need of one.
I consider myself more of a Steel Magnolia (as did my late Yankee husband, who bestowed that title on me after seeing me single handedly take on a bevy of lawyers in their own den…and coming out unscathed and victorious). As such, I tend to stand up for what I think is right. But, I guess since I am a woman who refuses to back down from bullies…and one who expects people to behave with a certain amount of decorum, that makes me either a whiner or a female dog, to men who are intimidated by strong women, and/or who were not raised with proper manners.
Ironically, if our maternal ancestors had not all been the same kind of woman I am, our Southern culture would have been destroyed by the carpetbaggers following the ‘War of Northern Aggression’.
So, go ahead and call me a ‘whiner’. I’ll take it as a compliment, based on the way you use it.

MH, you’ll get your wish soon enough. By the way you are such a whiner. Do you work for the Club for Growth to? Lastly, John Giles give me a break. That guy is a crook who funnels gambling money. Smith just can’t seem to get away from her gambling friends. Interesting how this Giles endorsement and the photos have a major connection. Stay tuned. Smith took the Giles bait like a fool. J.A. has lots of friends it seems.

Just because Love was the only other candidate mentioned in the press release does not mean he was the only other candidate courting the endorsement. I do not believe tht I said ALL the candidates were trying to get the endorsement…I believe my words wre that ‘all the major candidates’ or something to that effect. Sorry if you find that confusing.
The way I heard it, there were something like 3 or 4 candidates trying to get the endorsement…but that doesn’t mean that CFG took them all seriously enough to consider them, which might explain why the press release only refers to the two candidates who were both Republican, and currently holding a significant office.
As for whether or not CFG is ’significant in an important way’ or not, I have no idea. I’m not that into politics, except for local folks…and to be honest, had never even heard of CFG till they endorsed Smith. I just know that if the most viable candidates (at least, at the time) are trying to get an endrosement, there must be a darn good reason.
But then, that takes us back to that old ‘rule of logic’ thing again….the one that seems to go into suspended animation every time Smith’s detractors hear or read her name.
Comment by MH — May 8, 2008 @ 9:31 pm
While the rules of logic maybe suspended, the reality is not!..
Just so everyone knows, below is the press release from the Club For Growth regarding backing Smith. As you may read for yourself, the only two people named in this release were Smith and Love. I ask, how or why does that mean that ALL THE CANDIDATES tried to gain the club’s approval? Someone please explain!
Washington – Today, the Club for Growth PAC endorsed State Senator Harri Anne Smith in Alabama’s Second Congressional District.
Senator Smith has established a reputation for consistently opposing higher taxes and more government spending in the Alabama Legislature, even if it meant standing alone. When the Republican governor proposed a massive tax increase in 2003, Smith was the only senator—Republican and Democrat—to vote against it. She was also one of three to vote against an increase in the state tax on nursing homes. When it came to increased government spending, Senator Smith could be counted on to fight for smaller government.
The other candidate with a voting record presents a starkly different picture. Jay Love has voted for multiple tax increases as a state representative, including the massive tax hike in 2003. In 2005, he supported the governor’s plan to expand the prescription drug program and has also supported bloated government spending bills.
“Harri Anne Smith has a proven track record of sticking up for taxpayers,” said Club for Growth President Pat Toomey. “When a candidate is the only state senator voting against a massive tax increase, taxpayers know they can count on her to fight the tax hikers and big spenders in Congress.”
And I’m still waiting for an example of when the CFG was actually significant (in a positive way)!

Seriously,
Uh huh… I’ll believe them when they have been authenticated by a professional. Otherwise, I hope you have a really good lawyer.

MH, I have not forgotten about the photos. Waiting a bit longer in the month. Remember I promised to give you a heads up before they get released. I will do just that.

If being endorsed by Club For Growth is undesirable, why were the other candidates eagerly courting CFG’s endorsement? Sounds like sour grapes to me.
Then again, the rules of logic are often suspended on this board when it comes to Smith bashing. It is an amazing phenomenon of nature.
FYI, in case some of you folks are ‘newbies’ to this board…anonymous posts have zero credibility amongst regualr posters. While it is necessary to use some sort of pseudonym in order to protect ourselves from ‘nut jobs’, it is still important to establish some sort of identity so that we can see if your posts are consistent, honest, reliable, etc…or if they are just hit and run mud bombs. IOW, no identifier, no credibility. (On a personal note….be careful what identifier you select. I made the mistake of picking a pseudonym that happens to be the initials of Senator Smith’s mother and Danny had to intervene to attest that I am, indeed, not her mother, her sister, her husband, etc.)

Please excuse me, I’m a bit ignorant. What was the last race in which the Club For Growth was actually relevant, or better yet, actually helped? The special election in LA, Sen. Chafee’s (RI) 2006 reelection effort or Congressman Sali’s election?.. And yes, I know that Sali won, but I also know that the NRCC had to step in and make up for the CFG’s poor spending habits, which is ironic since it’s a conservative PAC… Don’t you agree?
I mean, don’t get me wrong, if I had as much bad press as some of these candidates, I’d take a kiss from the ugliest girl at the bar too.
Comment by Ego Sum Veritas — May 7, 2008 @ 8:47 pm
That is twice it has been said that the Club For Growth is a large grassroots organization. Doing a little research and it appears to just be a big PAC funded by Wall Street. No evidence of a grassroots organization at all. Keep trying MH.

do you want to talk about the property tax hike. that one was just a couple of years ago. Smith was the ONLY Republican legislator in the 2nd Congressional to vote in favor of the property tax hike on homeowners
Comment by Anonymous — May 7, 2008 @ 6:35 pm
And yet, the largest, strongest grassroots organization against taxes chose to endorse Smith above all the other candidates…..imagine that!
(rolling eyes)

Any time you look to answer your cell phone or make a call, remember that Senator Smith raised your taxes on that device.

SHE’S BACK!!!
Comment by William Wyatt Wallace — May 7, 2008 @ 4:05 pm
Club For Growth did a thorough investigation of ALL the candidates who sought their endorsement, and all of the major players courted that endorsement. It was only after doing THOROUGH background checks on each and every one of the ’suitors’, that CFG threw their support behind Smith.
Believe me, CFG knows every tax bill that Smith ever voted for, voted against, or abstained on. An organization of this size and influence does not give an endorsement to a candidate without knowing all the facts, and feeling quite confident that they share the same views on taxes.

That could be interesting to see the split between Old and New Coalition in support.
