Welcome to the AL - 02 Big List.

Alabama with the 2nd Congressional District highlightedThis list has been an attempt to keep up with everyone in either political party who has been credibly mentioned (in public or private) as a potential candidate for Alabama’s 2nd Congressional District since Rep. Terry Everett (R - Rehobeth) announced that he will not run for re-election.

Both parties’ qualifying period ended April 4, 2008. Three Democrats and six Republicans qualified for the primary race, and they are listed below. The primary is June 3.

The Political Parlor will update the Alabama Line (found in the sidebar) for the race, though perhaps not as fast as you like since input from a wide array of people is sought.

I noticed this morning on the way to work, that the Jay Love signs have been updated. Now there is a big black sign attached to them that reads “Christian Conservative Values”. What a farse!!! I didn’t know that slinging mud and pointing fingers were values held high in the Christian Beliefs. Remember this: “He who slings mud loses ground” I am in hopes that this old saying holds true. I want a proactive candidate, not a reactive candidate. This little escapade just goes to show you, Jay is the type to stand around and point fingers instead of working on an issue. And that is exactly what he will do if elected to Congress. He’ll stand around and say “Look at me, I made the bigtime” while the world goes on about it’s business without him doing anything about it.

I didn’t say HAS was in front. But maybe you have seen some numbers on this race as well, Hillary. You seemed to know that Smith was still leading . . .

The main thing I noticed from what I had seen was the movement of Woods and the relative stagnancy of other candidates. The race could be described as fluid if not for the lack of poll movement by candidates other than Woods. Obviously movement by Woods is troubling for Smith but highly disturbing for Love.

Dear “Knows” - if there are numbers showing HAAS ahead in this race, they must be from 3 months ago darling.

Jray, I would imagine you know she isn’t finished. If she was, you wouldn’t be trying do hard to create the impression. You wouldn’t have to. No one worries about candidates who are finished . . .that is why Woods and Smith are getting the bashing now.

The numbers are out there, and a prominent candidate IS in fact in big trouble. But it isn’t Smith . . . .

OK, stop picking on Mother Harris. After Smith’s run from questions in Dothan, MH has probably realized that HA is done. Wouldn’t surprise me to see HAS withdrawl from race before she damages her credibility so badly that she can’t get re-elected to the Senate. Is it true that HAS’s bill passed committee the other day?

Seriously, MH better not come on here claiming that Harri Anne invented electricity and helped land the first man on the moon. Those are COPYRIGHTED CLAIMS of the Jay Isuzu campaign!

Here’s something I think your readers may find of interest. I’ve posted below the results of a four-year survey address first responder training and readiness. Given the answers from the respondents, things generally don’t look that good.

The Homeland Security Group conducted a four-year survey addressing training, readiness and a variety of challenges faced by First Responders. Respondents of the survey included law enforcement, security, intelligence, emergency management personnel and other members engaged in homeland security and first response duties. The results of this survey show that after the attacks in September 2001, inadequacies remain regarding first responder preparation.

PRLog (Press Release) - April 30, 2008 - The survey focused on three main areas of concentration: Training, Hindrances and whether first responders feel they are adequately protected from a secondary attack. The questions posed during the survey address levels of readiness contrasting criminal vs. terror investigations.

    Training

Respondents were asked if they believe their agency has received proper training to determine differences between a criminal vs. terror incident. Of those responding to the survey, 58 percent stated they lack sufficient training. Many respondents indicated they lack sufficient training in WMD-related preparedness. Others described information sharing issues. While this initially appears to fit within the category of hindrances, many indicated that they lack proper training regarding who to share with, how to initiate and maintain communication and what issues specifically require external coordination.

    Hindrances

Respondents were asked three questions regarding whether the media, public or their own self-expectations hindered a criminal vs. a terror investigation. Responses indicate that 91 percent consider that the media poses a hindrance; 87 percent believe public expectations hinder an investigation, and 94 percent blame their own personal expectations as an encumbrance.

    Preparation for Secondary Attack

Respondents were asked if they believe they are adequately protected from secondary attacks during a possible criminal or terrorist incident. The survey shows that 91 percent of those responding feel they are not protected. Numerous comments by respondents indicated they actually expect a secondary attack during a terrorist incident but they lack training, resources and personnel for such an event.

Homeland Security Group founder, Anthony M. Davis began this survey four years ago intending to measure the readiness level of first responders. “I hoped to find some successes throughout the survey that could be translated to agencies nationwide”, he said. “Yet, throughout the measurement period, the numbers remained constant. While we’ve been very busy as a nation, we may not have been overly successful in preparing and protecting our personnel. There’s plenty of work to be done still.”

Mr. Anthony M. Davis began publishing the Homeland Security Report as a free service to law enforcement, intelligence, security and emergency management personnel in October 2001. Each report is an open source view of homeland security issues and provides select officer safety information. Based on the ongoing results of the survey and discussions with first responders worldwide, Anthony M. Davis began authoring “Terrorism and the Maritime Transportation System.”

According to Mr. Davis, “This book is not so much about terrorism. It is intended as a guide to provide first responders a view of the perspective need for readiness in the face of a potential attack.”The expected availability of the new text, “Terrorism and the Maritime Transportation System” is in May 2008.

I have not heard any talk come up of him being the new guy in town other than on this board. the general voting public has not made an issue of his “carpet bagger” status. i doubt it will be an issue unless another candidate feels he is a real threat and they start pointing that fact out. He will take more votes from Mrs. Smith than she expects though. She will not do as well as she thinks…

Schmidtke? - I do not believe he can earn the votes needed to win. Granted, he is a very good orator and well versed on the issues, but frankly, I believe his “newness” to the community will hurt him. He will be portrayed as a newcomer trying to change southern values, and some will even go as far as to label him a carpetbagger. He might be a nice guy, but just don’t think he can win this time around. He may have a chance in the future, but not this election.

I am one of those who sees a need for new, fresh faces in the world of politics. I don’t always agree with people when they talk about change, because let’s face it: change isn’t always good. That being said, I am doing an about face, and saying that I think Schmidtke is the best possible choice for Dist 2. He has yet to throw any mud. He made a decision to stand up for the business owners who were pro-bingo in the Country Crossings, and has stood behind that decision. I have been lucky enough to meet him in person, and I will tell you that as far as I am concerned he is THE ONLY candidate who has no ties to any single part of the district, and will represent the whole of the district instead of on particular region. You can laugh if you want, but Love and Grimes will both take votes from the district, but represent only a few of those people who live there. The same, probably to an even larger extent, will happen if HAS is elected. She obviously doesn’t listen to the people she represents in the southern part of the state, or she wouldn’t have introduced the bill to stop the Country Crossings development in the first place. (I know, she had the bill withdrawn, but it was only after she saw how many toes she had stepped on) If she can’t represent the people from just that small area, how does she expect to represent the entire 16 county district.
Schmidtke is in it for one thing, and one thing only. He honestly and truthfully believes he can help change the way the country is run, and in doing so can help bring about the changes necessary for the district, AS A WHOLE, to grow and prosper. He’s obviously not in it for the money as he would probably be taking a paycut, and let’s face it, he’s not in it for the glamour. How “sexy” can the role of a congressman really be?? I have heard his stance on immigration and it’s relationship to the stress on our MediCare system, and I have also heard his stance on being PRO LIFE. He is an honest person, and I think the district would be at a loss of he is not given the chance to lead us into the future.
As for the other candidates, Woods and Martin, I see no clear reason to vote for them other than the fact that Woods is a business owner and Martin is a cattleman. To hear Woods speak you would think he was the only person in the world who owns or runs a business. And his father’s coat tails are probably so threadbare you can see through them, as that is his introduction into every speaking engagement he attends. Martin, on the other hand, served as a veteran and is now a farm owner. So he can raise cows and rub elbows with the military, big deal. I am lookig at the big picture, and the frame around that picture is this. We need a man of good character, who isn’t affraid to ruffle a few feathers, and doesn’t care whose feathers get ruffled, in order to bring stability back to our government. I sincerely believe that person is Craig Schmidtke. And by the way, he can and will beat Bright in the general election. A Republican will retain this seat, and I think many will be surprised how large of a victory it will be.
