AL-02 Big List

See also the AL - 05 Big List.

Welcome to the AL - 02 Big List.

Alabama with the 2nd Congressional District highlightedThis list has been an attempt to keep up with everyone in either political party who has been credibly mentioned (in public or private) as a potential candidate for Alabama’s 2nd Congressional District since Rep. Terry Everett (R - Rehobeth) announced that he will not run for re-election.

Both parties’ qualifying period ended April 4, 2008. Three Democrats and six Republicans qualified for the primary race, and they are listed below. The primary is June 3.

The Political Parlor will update the Alabama Line (found in the sidebar) for the race, though perhaps not as fast as you like since input from a wide array of people is sought.

It is my understanding that all three debates will be televised. If not, I would say that the media is slipping and doing their viewers disservice. I’m sure a lot of people won’t be able to view the first debate due to work schedules, etc. Most of the people I know don’t own a TIVO or similar gadget. So if the station has changed their mind about airing all the debates, they are not being very customer service oriented.

I haven’t seen the donor list. I was just making an observation that a $2300 donation is not a huge sum of money when you look at it in context.

Post 633 is right on the “money” I am not sure who I will vote for in the primary, but because Smith chooses to not debate Friday, she has lost my vote. I see it as a choice - I don’t buy the “conflict” excuse and I doubt others do as well. It is the only televised debate so she will skip it and do the ones that are not televised. I find that amazing,

MH, you have go to be kidding me. How many average everyday folks can pony up 2300 to give to a politician? That post from you surprises me more than anything you have ever posted. And if you look at the donors, it was 2300 from the husband, 2300 from the wife, 2300 from their son, 2300 from their daughter in law, etc. I don’t have anything against these folks but they are not your average voter in the second district.

Since the Federal cap on donations is $2300 per person, or $4600 per couple,(for the primary, then the same for the general election) I wouldn’t exactly say that all Smith’s donors are ‘fat cats’.

$2300 isn’t even 10% of the cost of a new car these days. $2300 would refuel the average car only 59 times. The median home price for this area is around $225k right now. In today’s economy, $2300 is peanuts. IOW, pretty much every middle class income person would qualify as a ‘fat cat’ under this definition.

To 620: Woods ads did not begin running until April 3. There were no tv ads in first quarter.

I am interested in the connection bewteen Jay Love and Stan Pate. Pate is a true nut case and a bomb thrower who despises Bob Riley. Why is he now Jay Love’s best bud? Isn’t Love supposed to be the governor’s candidate? Does this have anything to do with Love voting against the Governor and with Exxon the other day? I am just floored by this.

HA Smith is clearly the front-runner in contributions. But a whole bunch of it goes out the back-door to consultants and pollsters, instead of out the front-door to actual campaigning. Based on her recent performance running from the press, it makes me wonder if she has the character to stand up for what she actually believes in. By the way, what does she believe in? I guess the bottom line is, “will money win this race?”

Not bragging about anything at all. That is just a very interesting statistic and noteworthy in any event. Nothing in the post inferred support of a candidate, although your response certainly indicates an interest in the fortunes of someone.

So you are bragging about Harri Ane Smith being supported by fat cat donors that will tell her what to do and how high to jump? What a freakin’ moron… but thanks for pointing that out.

  11. 630

If you are keeping score out there, that means for every Jay Love donor writing a maxed-out check, Harri Anne has 13.

    That’s not a typo. 13 to One.

Here is a very very interesting factoid from the FEC reports:

Number of individual donors donating the maximum $2300: Harri Anne Smith - 53; Jay Love - 4. All others - 0.

There’s no doubt where the money is going in this one.

I would not agree with that vote, but Grimes’ credentials as a real Republican dwarf Love’s - Grimes was not a RINO union candidate when he went in; he was supported bt real Republicans who had enough of another RINO. By the way,did the Governor see that Love’s biggest contributor is his archenemy Stan Pate???!!!!! The same S-T-A-N Pate who tried mightily to elect Lucy Baxley in 2006?
And the same Stan Pate who just sued the Governor and WON for $63 million????

Grimes voted for the expansion of gambling yesterday [less than 24 hours ago] and a monopoly for Milton McGregor. Regardless of who you support in this race, his vote was not indicative of a “real republican”

Grimes is in, and polling pretty well - almost as strong as Love and Woods. Grimes won’t pull out - you can ta ke that to the bank. Love wants him out of the race BAD as Grimes has a base in Montgomery and is a real Republican. He definitely is a negative for Love and a possible positive for Smith and Woods.

OK folks, here’s one more question. Grimes, Martin, and Sabel have not reported. Does that mean that they are dropping out of the race?
