AL-02 Big List

See also the AL - 05 Big List.

Welcome to the AL - 02 Big List.

Alabama with the 2nd Congressional District highlightedThis list has been an attempt to keep up with everyone in either political party who has been credibly mentioned (in public or private) as a potential candidate for Alabama’s 2nd Congressional District since Rep. Terry Everett (R - Rehobeth) announced that he will not run for re-election.

Both parties’ qualifying period ended April 4, 2008. Three Democrats and six Republicans qualified for the primary race, and they are listed below. The primary is June 3.

The Political Parlor will update the Alabama Line (found in the sidebar) for the race, though perhaps not as fast as you like since input from a wide array of people is sought.

I’ve been reading comments on this forum for the last few months. Thought I’d jump on board. Maybe one of you can explain to me how Woods can run all of those campaign ads on TV, but have no advertising expense on his 1st quarter report. Also, isn’t it illegal to use his corporation to fund his campaign?

For Nutty - in the first qualrter it WAS 4-to-1. Love raised $60,000, Smith a quarter of a million.

NOT a democrat I think you meant. And that is true, PAC financed. So much for the good ole aww shucks guy he wants us to think he is

It is true - check out Brights FEC report…all the money he has received thus far seems to be from lawyers and PACs. He will reply more on PAC money than anyone. Those don’t sound like “wiregrass values” to me!
Next, I guess Nancy Pelosi and Hillary will be down here on his behalf. Oh wait…that will not happen because publicly, he acts like he is a democrat.

Check out Bobby Bright’s disclosure form, that is interesting. So much for distancing himself from the National Democrats.

Lets’ talk about the real issue here. Senator Smith can’t seem to find her way to Montgomery on Friday to be in the debate with ALL the other candidates when she has known about it for two months. If you’re scared, so you’re scared!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As if we need that type of person fighting for alabama in washington!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Smith raised 244,000 (plus change)

    Love raised 126,000 (plus change)

Yes she led, but that is not 4 to 1. And what has Woods done in terms of contributions other than loan or give himself cash and get PAC money????????????

For the guy below who wanted to know where Harri Anne is : she is apparently at the bank depositing money - that Jay Love and David Woods and Craig Schmidtke can then borrow.

    Comment by E.F. Hutton — April 16, 2008 @ 3:15 pm

  10. 611

As a point of reference, Love has raised about $130K in actual contributions while spending $160K - a deficit of $30,000. He is campaigning on borrowed money. Woods, Grimes, and Smith are all in the black.

    Comment by Money talks — April 16, 2008 @ 3:04 pm

  11. 610

I just saw her disclosure and she is outraising Love at a 4-to-1 clip.

    I don’t think she’ll be dropping out.

Oh - David Woods and Craig Schmidtke are also beating Love in fundraising for the quarter. Love only raised $60k and is in debt and using his loans - no other candidate is doing that, apparently. So maybe the rumors are about Love droopping out, as he is having distinct fundraising problems.

Is Harri Anne Smith dropping out of the race? I have heard that little nugget more than once this week.

Gilley is not someone I would put my trust in, just my opinion. But John Deere’s point of Hillary Anne Smith (I like that new name someone has come up with on here!) changing her convictions based on polls is a VERY valid one. She polls more than anyone to figure out how whe should vote. We don’t need that folks… HILLARY ANNE SMITH indeed.

    Comment by JohnJohn — April 15, 2008 @ 2:28 pm

    C’mon John Deere,
Usually bringing in new jobs and being against gambling are good things…and if you look at Smith’s history and her conservative values, it is pretty easy to see how this whole quagmire can put someone with her values in a really sticky situation. If she upholds the conservative values of the area, she is seen as being against bringing in jobs. If she supports the project, she is seen as being pro-gambling. Being for jobs and against gambling are normally two different issues.

It seems to me that if Ronnie Gilley can make BamaJam work and make money, why can’t he make the Country Crossings work without gambling…or is there more to this project than meets the eye?

IMHO, I think the folks of this area should be looking past the hype, and into the details of the proposed project. As I’ve said before, how does ‘charitable’ bingo make Gilley any money? Or does it? Something is fishy here…and while we definitely need the jobs and the tourism income, we need to take a long hard look at the project. It just seems to me that there is more going on here than meets the eye.

    Comment by MH — April 15, 2008 @ 2:22 pm

  15. 606

She’s really stepped in it now. Is she an anti-gambling crusader like when she introduced her bill or is she all about bringing jobs to the area like when she pulled her bill? If anyone can figure it out let me know.

Let’s hope she doesn’t get flooded with phone calls supporting partial-birth abortion. Or pulling the troops out of the Middle East. Or even giving amnesty to illegals.

How will we ever know what she really believes in?

I attended a meeting yesterday evening about the I-10 connector and missed the HAS announcement, though a County Commissioner at the meeting did state that HAS had withdrawn her Bingo Bill. Hmmmm. I later found the video on RSN.

I wonder if she knew the flag on her podium is improperly draped?

The press event was poor to say the least but more than that…she has managed to make folks on both sides of the gambling issue mad. maybe she should rely less on consultants and more on what she feels is the right thing to do and stick to it. oh wait - my pollster is calling - got to run…
