Welcome to the AL - 02 Big List.
This list has been an attempt to keep up with everyone in either political party who has been credibly mentioned (in public or private) as a potential candidate for Alabama’s 2nd Congressional District since Rep. Terry Everett (R - Rehobeth) announced that he will not run for re-election.
Both parties’ qualifying period ended April 4, 2008. Three Democrats and six Republicans qualified for the primary race, and they are listed below. The primary is June 3.
The Political Parlor will update the Alabama Line (found in the sidebar) for the race, though perhaps not as fast as you like since input from a wide array of people is sought.

MH, I stand corrected. Harri Anne has jumped in for now. Whether she stays the course for the duration is anyone’s guess at this point. Don’t start looking for apartments in DC though since you are going to be her chief of staff. Smith will not win. By the way how many times did you respond favorably to that bogus poll? Way to start the campaign rolling with integrity.

I believe Ghandi is running in the GOP primary. Along with Bob Howell, Rich Thomas, and the President of Hyundai. The deadline for qualifying can’t get here quick enough.

Larry is in area 51 waiting for the Mother Ship . . . .

One name that no one has so far raised is that of Larry Darby who captured 160,000 votes in 2006 in the Democrat primary for attorney general. Darby, who was controversial for his comments about the existence of the Holocaust, stated in August 2006 he would run for the second congressional district seat in 2008. Where are you Larry?
Comment by Concerned Citizen — November 7, 2007 @ 10:19 am
Re comment #214… Josh Segall told me there is no chance that he would run for this seat.

I see that Greg Wren has qualified to run as a Thompson delegate for the Republican National Convention, from the 3rd District. I know that residency is not a requirement to run for Congress, but this seems to either be a signal that Wren may be considering taking his hat out of the ring, or a sign that he really believes the voters don’t care where you live.

I hear Josh Segall of Montgomery is running. He is the son of Bobby Segall, the lawyer and former Alabama Bar president. He is 28 or 29 years old . . . and recently finished a federal clerkship in Montgomery. If Bobby Bright does not get in, I imagine he will have a real shot at winning the Democratic nomination, and then taking down Harri Anne Smith.

This is so old. I like Tim James and hope he will run but I don’t that thinks Harri Anne Smith is anything put a smile. Nice lady but nothing else there. Nailen is an unknown but all that has been thrown at him on this blog seems baseless to me except he may have to explain his position on Amendment One. But even with that, it was a non issue when Riley ran for re election and he was the force behind amendment one. James I get it. Harri Anne I don’t. Nailen you guys seem biased beyond rational belief. JT is right about some things but not all.
Comment by GOPer — October 26, 2007 @ 5:41 pm
And one more fact:
Both Harri Anne Smith and Tim James actively opposed the huge tax hike Charles Nailen supported.
Faccs are stubborn things JT.
Comment by Baggage — October 26, 2007 @ 4:38 pm
Here is another fact, listed as you requested:
Neither Tim James or Harri Anne Smith has ever found it necessary to give a dime of money to a Democrat in a federal race, although they, like Nailen, are Alabama businesspeople.
Comment by Baggage — October 26, 2007 @ 4:36 pm
Here is another fact, listed as you asked:
Charles Nailen has contributed money to liberal Democrats such as Artur Davis.
Comment by Baggage — October 26, 2007 @ 4:34 pm
Hey that should have been “Charles Nailen worked to impose the biggest TAX hike in American history on the people of Alabama. ” Sorry about that.
Comment by Baggage — October 26, 2007 @ 4:32 pm
Iey I’ll list facts. I’ll put each fact in a new post for you:
Fact: Charles Nailen worked to pass the biggest hike in US history.
Comment by Baggage — October 26, 2007 @ 4:31 pm
Aamazing that the same blogger keeps posting negative things and changing their name instead of listing facts or concentrating on issues that will actually matter. As has been said here before…tired ole’ posts over and over.
Comment by JT — October 26, 2007 @ 4:10 pm
It does appear that Nailen has an awful lot of negative baggage - tax-hike support, bad political contributions, etc. - for a political “outsider.” His campaign seems to be taking on water already and he hasn’t even declared. I don’t think he’ll make it to the starting blocks, much less the finsih line.
Comment by Baggage — October 26, 2007 @ 3:11 pm
I find all this ridiculous. The AL GOP will not block Charles Nailen from running if he wants too. Mike Hubbard and Governor Riley will see to that. In terms of support for Artur Davis, that will likewise be a non issue that does not make or break the race.
Yes, Bright is a Democrat as are others talking about running as Republicans in this race. Jimmy Holley for example. They will not be accepted by primary GOP voters in my opinion.
Comment by GOPer — October 26, 2007 @ 2:24 pm
By the way I agree with the previous poster that stated that Bobby Bright is really a Democrat. You can terll by his election contributions, which have gone to liberal Democrats. He gave $1,000 to Artur Davis, just like Charles Nailen.
Comment by Artur Davis - didn't BCA love him? — October 26, 2007 @ 1:24 pm
There is no doubt that Charles Nailen did contribute to Artur Davis, so I don’t follow the logic of attacking credibilty on that point. And I am puzzled by the willingness of some apparent Nailen supporters to continue to argue this point when it serves to keep the issue of Charles Nailen’s contributions to Artur Davis at the forefront of this discussion. It would seem that Nailen would want to distance himself from his financial support of Don Siegelman’s most aggressive defender, but you never know. Maybe he is planning on soliciting some money from Artur’s campaign fund.
Comment by Artur Davis - didn't BCA love him? — October 26, 2007 @ 1:17 pm
For JT: An executive committee member that every prominent GOP-type in this state knows who is also a very prominent attorney personally told me that the rule in question does not only apply to officeholders.
Comment by Exec Committee — October 26, 2007 @ 1:10 pm
Blog entries by “Mark Foley” and “Nailen” now lack all credibility. False statements about FEC reports and misleading information about AL Republican Party rules. It doesn’t matter what possible candidate your slam or champion, do your homework then post a legitimate (i.e. factually accurate) post.
