Smith will not be allowed to run as a Republican, the state party bylaws say that she has to qualify as a republican with the party she just pisssed all over a year ago. You really think the GOP is going to welcome her with open arm. She is living in a fantasy world, her own party doesn’t support her, she’ll switch to Democrat or Independent then settle for a blowout as she gets defeated by the Republican nominee. Bobby Bright won’t be able to save her either, his election is on the ropes too after voting for Nancy Pelosi for speaker in D.C.

  • Fred Durst

Concerned Citizen who are you???? I’d like to know????

My name is Fred Durst from Hartford.

  • Outside-lookin-in

Can’t believe I have seen several “Bring George Back”signs in South Mobile County…as in George Callahan !!! Only in L.A.~~~

  • 2010

52 is correct that it is doubtful smith will be allowed to run in the GOP primary. no way she can run as a dem and win. will she try to run as an indy? who knows. geneva county still supports her but houston county, where a majority of the votes are, can’t wait to see her leave office. in terms of bright, don’t look for him to do anything to try and save her…..he is out for himself and no one else.

  • Wiregrass Republican

I suspect Smith will not seek re-election to the Al. Senate. She is opening a new branch bank in Dothan and will probably run that operation. She and George are good friends and George respects her (still).

Therefore, George would not be running for the seat unless he had already spoken to HAS and she told him her intentions. She will not publicly endorse anyone, but she will support George. Typical of HAS, she will wait until the last minute to announce her intentions not to run citing some important measure that requires her personal attention.

Bright will distance himself from the S29 Republican race and Smith due to her bad karma. He needs help to get re-elected and won’t find it in the Wiregrass.

  • 2010

i mostly agree with the last post….. and i think smith is looking for a way out….a way not to run….she knows things look rough for her if she has another election on her hands.

  • Concerned Citizen

Fred Durst from Hartford I am a concerned citizen from Dothan.

  • Tiger

Smith lost that congressional election all on her own. She should have won it but ran a very stupid primary campaign. She really became the laughingstock of the whole state.

The icing on the cake was when she campaigned for Bright after losing to Love. I knew it was over for her as soon as that broke on the news.

Her seat will stay republican but she won’t be able to keep it. Friends in Dothan said she burned a lot of bridges and feelings run deep. What a stupid thing for her to do.

  • 2010

Exactly right, Tiger. Geneva County may like her but the votes are in Houston County….. and she has ruined herself there.

  • UABwoman

I live in next door in Coffee county and have dem. and rep .friends in Geneva county, I’d say that she has more support from the democrats in her county than the republicans. The democrats are thinking that they will get a lot of mileage from her causing a big problem in the republican party. People in the county are still mad about her doing that and wish she would just go away. She must be a big narcissist to think she is above the rules of the party she used to belong to.

  • 2010

it would be nice if harry would bow out gracefully – but as she has shown – she is not capable of that.

  • GotMilk?

Jay Love and the State republican party found out that “hell hath no fury like a woman scorned”. I have a feeling she ain’t done with her making a mess of everything.

  • 2010

I think she may try and run as an indy. The problem is, she showed her senate district that she is rather inept by running such a poor congressional race and she ended up looking very bitter and hypocritical. She is not capable of winning enough votes in Houston County to win no matter what ticket she tries to run on.

  • JD

Wendell Mitchell (D) Montgomery has announced for reelection per WSFA

  • Thunder3325

Wendell Mitchell can be beaten, if the GOP will just put up a strong, smart candidate against him. Someone with real ideas and not mere “red meat” rhetoric. I live in his district, and I can tell you that it is a very Republican-leaning area of the state.

Joan Reynolds’ unsuccessful campaign against him in 2006 was a joke from the start, and got really, really ugly. The GOP needs to avoid that mess this time. Put up a candidate in the mold of Paul Sanford, and this seat will flip red in 2010.

  • Anon

Against Wendell Mitchell, what about this Kyle Shirley guy?

  • Baby Blue

Kyle Shirley is a law student originally from Prattville. He will not run for the seat, my guess is he is just trying to start floating his name for future involvement in state politics.

But I think thunder is right. They just need a good candidate. But that has been the Achilles heel for the GOP…finding solid candidates. I guess we will see how it will shake out, but I really think that will be a very competitive senate race in 2010.

  • Does anyone really believe that Zeb Little and Hinton Mitchem are going to run again? There have been indications the last few years that both of them want out. I know that Zeb has even stated publicly that he’s running again. But with all thats gone on with him and the conservative and dry Cullman County serving as his base. I won’t believe it until the filing deadline passes.

  • mac

Duncan Kirkwood is listed here for SD-25, but his website lists his as SD-26.

  • Landingham

Haven’t seen an announcement, but Billy Beasley’s poll in SD 28 also lists Macon County Commissioner Drew Thompson as a candidate.

  • Catwoman

What does State Senator Harri Anne Smith, US Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, and US Congressman Charlie Rangel all have in common? They all support US Rep Bobby Bright for congress. Do we want a RINO to represent us in the Senate? Let’s get someone who doesn’t side with the like of Pelosi and Rangel!

  • 2010

harri smith needs to save herself the trouble (and us) and not run again. not many knew what she was about until she ran for Congress. Now that she has revealed herself to the voters at large, we know we don’t need her in the state senate. geneva county may like her fine but Houston County (Dothan) will not vote for her in large numbers again. She may not even by allowed to run again on the GOP ticket….we will see. Maybe she should just run as a democrat. She was a democrat years ago and only switched to run for the state senate. She should switch back…

  • On SD1, we spoke to Lynn Greer & he will be running for the House, not the Senate.

  • Anonymous

For Senate District 31 you should add as a Democrat Johnny Vaughan and also as a GOP candidate Ricky Snellgrove. Snellgrove ran unsuccessfully against Rep. Terry Spicer last election.

  • anonymous

Danny – before the site format cnaged, only the candidates who had declared were listed in bold. Is there a way to convert the appearance to the previous view, so that those who have simply been mentioned as possible candidates would be indicated otherwise?
    Thanks for this resource.

  • Yes, on this page and elsewhere there are definitely formatting issues to be addressed since the change. It’s on the list.

    :)

  • Paul

What party is Mr. Greer running on this time?

  • Thunder3325

You can take Terry Butts off the list for SD 30. I know for a fact that he considered the race, but he is not running.

  • 2010

jeff coleman can be taken off for senate 29. it is going to be george flowers vs harri anne…

Sen 5 candidate Greg Reed has a website as well. Go visit

  • dano

For those candidates who have not filed their campaign finance report, is that the end of their campaigns? or do they get a second chance?

  • dano,

If a candidates receives the most votes but did not file a required campaign finance report before the election, typically the results are not certified, i.e. they do not count. If a candidate files late but before the election, precedent has established that the results stand. The candidate may be guilty of a misdemeanor if the AG pursues the matter.

I had the same question myself and looked into it a few weeks back.

    Danny

  • Dano,
It also depends on where the candidate stands in fundraising/expenditures. For example, State Senate candidates aren’t required to file finance reports until they reach $10,000 in donations or expenditures (there are other requirements, but just as an example). I am a candidate, but haven’t accepted any donations or spent any money yet, so I’m not required to file a report yet.

    Hope this helps.
    Angela Laughlin

Thanks for the follow-ups, Danny and Angie. It seems to be a pretty loose standard then, hardly a strict rule.

Tom Butler in District 2 has been VERY UNRESPONSIVE. HE needs to be voted out!

Be Careful What You Ask For

Alabama just finished one of the bizarre primary election cycles in recent memory. I mean really, who would have ever thought 12 months ago that Ron Sparks and Robert Bentley would have been facing off against one another for the big prize? Both men are personal friends but I think even they had to [...]

Regardless of Political Stripes Vote Tomorrow

As an elected official, I am tuned into voting habits and practices.
