July 13, 2010 – Updated with unofficial Associated Press report, as always, etc

The incumbent is listed first.  Challengers are indented.

The ratings for the races may change over time.

FotM is a ink to a web page at Follow the Money, a site that specializes in collecting and analyzing campaign finance data.  Linking to the candidates FCPA reports at the Secretary of State's office is problematic since the url for a candidate's reports is not static.  For authoritative data, please use the search function at the Secretary of State's web site

As of June 30, 2010, Follow the Money has not processed all the data it has for Alabama, so, many of these links will go to pages that are incomplete.   It might be informative to ask the candidate for a copy of his report.

Be sure to check back for updates. And you can help us keep this information current and complete by sending us updated info.

Isn’t this an interesting article on Senator Harri Anne Smith and the trouble her friend Ricky Stokes is making for local party Republicans in Houston County. Threatening people who oppose her because she violated the party bylaws.

    http://www.rickeystokesnews.com/article.php/will-she-able-to-run-as-a-republican-5396

    “Here is my interesting point.

Alabama Senator Harri Anne Smith has been a Republican Alabama Senator for several years. She took a stand in the last Alabama Governor race and endorsed Governor Bob Riley. Held a Montgomery press conference giving her unwaivering support for Riley.

When Smith ran for Congress, Riley supported another Republican for Congress. He mistreated Smith in that race. In fact, I stand on the fact he lied to Senator Smith.

Senator Smith could not support the Republican nominee. She wrestled with the decision, and decided to endorse who she felt was the best man for the job. That man was Bobby Bright.

You know the story, Bright won. He has been doing an outstanding job for the people in his short tenure as Congressman.

Some Alabama Republicans are against allowing Senator Smith to seek reelection as a Republican. Some of the those are in Houston County. They have been friendly to her face, all the while knifing her in the back. I have heard their comments, have their pictures and will be posting them closer to election.

Some of them showed up on the scene in Dothan and have taken Republican leadership roles, basically just showing up in Houston County.

As you can see from Byrne’s facebook, Senator Smith is now on the scene, supporting a Republican. She is helping raise money for the Republican along side Dothan Mayor Elect Mike Schmitz.

We need more American’s, more Alabamians, that support America, that support Alabama, and what is best for our Country, our State, our County, Our City. Not what is best for a certain party.

The Houston County Republican Committee is trying to put the responsibility on Senator Smith’s Republican status on a certain group of “elite” out of touch Republicans. No one on this committee lives south of Montgomery. All the while, the local Republicans, some are talking two faced.

You know who you are, I know who you are.

Remember, it is not about the party, but what is best to move Alabama forward. What is best for the people, not a certain cocktail party group.”

Rickey is a die hard Democrat and she is a Republican who supported a Democrat. Does the word “RINO” come to mind anyone?

In House Dist. 39, former Cherokee County Probate judge J. Kirk Day is gearing up for a run against Rep. Richard Lindsey. Lindsey played a major part, behind the scene, of course, in Day’s narrow defeat in the probate judge’s race. Day plans to make an issue of Lindsey’s involvment in Sue Schmit’s employment, and conviction. Also, he plans to make an issue of Lindsey’s wife being paid by Gadsden State as well as being paid by a vendor who does business with the education system in the state. Should be interesting!!

Long time Republican and community activist Joel Lonnergan has announced that he will challenge Blain Galliher in 2010 for his seat (District 30) in the Alabama State House of Representatives. Press release dated October 13, 2009.

  • Shane Grimes (R) has announced and is running an active campaign against Betty Graham, District 81, and Leon Archer has not announced to be a candidate and I suspect he may not like his name on this website.

    John Prophitt
    Chairman, Tallapoosa County Republican Party.

  • I found a link online also mentioning Shane Grimes as a candidate for HD 81. Thank you for the info on that, John Prophitt.

I do not show Leon Archer here as an announced candidate (in bold), only as a potential one (in italics). I wonder what would be his objection to being mentioned as a potential candidate. Do we know that he is not a potential candidate?

    Thanks again.

comment 50 – thanks for the bias love fest for harri smith. give me a break. you must be from geneva county and not from houston. there is no love lost for her in houston county. she embarrassed herself in her run for congress. she showed herself to be not well versed on the issues, lacking conviction, lazy on the campaign trail, a hypocrite when it came to negative ads, and a bitter and self serving loser that shopped her endorsement around before endorsing a democrat. And by your praise for a democrat (Bright)….I think we know where you stand on that.
Smith wold have been better off not to have run and kept those qualities hidden from the electorate. She did not – and thus will likely bet beat should she be allowed to run in the GOP primary. You speak of her unwavering support for Governor Riley in his re election campaign but you leave out the part where she was going to run against him in the primary and was looking for support. When she could not get it, she then endorsed Riley to try and get as much attention as she could. Let’s just be honest about what she is all about. She is not a victim – in fact – things have been handed to her and she feels deserving and expecting as if she should have been anointed the next Member of Congress. Maybe she would have done a little better running for Congress if she had not gone around telling everyone what a good Governor she would make during the Congressional race. Ummmm…..wrong race, Harri. She could have stayed in the Senate for a while but now that people know what she is all about…she is likely done. Her campaign was a train wreck yet post 50 paints her as a victim. Amazing….

  • 2010

i was referring to post 51, not 50 with my comments. I will also ad that citing rickystokesnews as a source is comical. The guy is a bail bondsmen with a website on the side that mainly covers car accidents and fire department calls. When he does give his thoughts on local politics it is always his point of view…which is his right….but it should not be called news….it is 100% his opinion and not un biased. he loves troy king and harri smith if that tells you where he stands….

  • Talmadge

Jeremy Cline, a possible candidate in House District 11, will more than likely not be running against Jeremy Oden in the 2010 election.

  • Montgomery Voter

Wonder who else will get in to HD73? I’ve heard that the ALGOP has been recruiting and that there might be a third primary candidate, but they’ve got their guy now with Walker, I suspect.

David Pinkleton has announced his bid for House District 20.

    http://www.newconservativeenergy.com/

  • waltm

Would be nice if his web site gave some idea of which party’s ticket or not, he’s running on.

  • Dynamic

Waltm…I was just looking over the site, and David Pinkleton is a member of the Madison County Men’s Republican Club, so I would assume that he is running as a Republican.

  • waltm

Am loath to list someone as something unless they state it. Remember what they say about assume. Looking it over, I did not see something like “seeking republican/democratic/green/theosophist nomination”, “running as whatever”, etc.

He should use the Contact form or post here and will fix.

  • degan

Jason Hurst is listed as a challenger to Steve Hurst in House District 35. Best I can tell, Jason doesn’t even live in that district.
Ben Crawford has announced that he is a candidate for that seat.

  • waltm

Degan, can’t find a press release in either the Daily Home or Anniston Star but found him on face book.

FWIW, I’ve using newspapers to track candidate announcements so remember your local paper. If you have a website, facebook page, etc, please remember to include it in the release.

I did a little more digging and found his facebook fan page which has him listed as a Republican candidate.

Thanks, fixed. Let hope all of us learned something or the other from this. Added Sanderford’s Facebook page too.

in 2006 didn’t a guy named sikes run against wren for hd75?

  • Donald Wood from Oxford is running as a Republican for District 35 Seat. He is a member of the Air National Guard and a FEMA contractor.

  • waltm

Not finding much to confirm (press release, news article, etc). Could because they be a lot of Donald Wood’s out there. Will add as a potential Republican candidate for now.

Looks like Jeremy Walker has officially announced: http://www.walker2010.com

  • Mgm Insider

The third person looking to get in the HD73 primary, I hear, is Twinkle Andress Cavanaugh. Also heard that Walker may not stay in that race if Twinkle gets in. I guess she is the “Shadow candidate folks are talking about.

Benjamin Crawford (House District 35) has an official campaign website up at:

It would be one of those must have flash to view content sites… sigh

  • JamesB

There is another candidate for State House District 20, and that is Frances Taylor. Don’t know if she has filed yet, but she has a website at .

  • Supporter

The aladems.org website is reporting a Lindsay Ford, democrat for seat 40.

In the Al. House Dist. 85 race, I’m pleased that one candidate showed his true colors. The hot topic of the wiregrass is Country Crossings. Like it or not, candidate Anthony Keith did not speak the politically correct thing by saying as everyone else did. He took a stand and cited his support. He may gain or lose votes but he certainly gained my families support. Not for his support for the project, but for being a man and not a true politician by taking a stand.

I noted that House Race 35 is still listed as “Safe Democrat.” This likely should have been updated when Crawford (an extremely popular young Republican)entered the race. That’s just my opinion.
Regardless, at this point there are THREE Republicans competing for the privilege of retiring Steve Hurst. And with Senator Preuitt’s defection to the Republican Party, there is definitely blood in the water.
The Alabama Republican Party has identified District 35 as one of eight target districts. No one involved in state politics believes that Hurst is “safe.”

  • Thanks, RG, it’s probably time to review all those now that qualifying has ended.

  • Beverly Owen Barber

I am a GOP candidate for House District 36. My name does not appear on the list.

  • Thank you, Ms. Barber. When you left your comment, I was in the process of adding several names, including yours.

    Good luck with your campaign!

Legislative Dispatch

A Look from the Rearview Mirror

This Thursday will mark the last day of the legislative Session.  For some, it was a Session that seemed would never end.  For others, it was one that ended much too quickly.  It may be early, yet, to write an obit on this Session, but as we approach the finish line, some perspective may be in order.

Putting Students First

As you know, a very important piece of legislation will be presented for our consideration in the House tomorrow in Montgomery – Senate Bill 310 – the “Students First” tenure and fair dismissal reform bill. Like me, many House members have been inundated with phone calls and emails from opponents of this bill, and some have been [...]

Legislative Transparency

There are a lot of issues to debate before we begin the final days of this session. In fact, I am quite certain there will be some comments on this post debating many of them. Before we get into the last seven day of the session I wanted to bring up a topic that [...]
